MBSR (Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction) is an eight-week evidence-based program that teaches participants the principles of mindfulness and how to apply these principles to deal more effectively with stress and the demands of daily life. Often described as moment-to-moment, non-judgmental awareness, mindfulness offers us a lens through which to experience our lives in a more present, alert, and gentle way. Participants will be instructed on a variety of mindfulness practices, including sitting meditation, body scan, and gentle yoga (mindful movement). Mindfulness practice helps us relate directly to what we are feeling in our bodies, hearts and minds with gentleness, curiosity and compassionate awareness. All that we encounter in our lives – the stress, the pain, the pressures of daily life, and even the joy – can be experienced through this lens of mindfulness. As a result, we may feel many positive benefits and a general sense of wellbeing and balance.

The first half of each class will include an extended period of practice, incorporating different forms of guided meditation as well as gentle, mindful movement. The second half of each class is dedicated to group discussion (inquiry) – exploring participants’ direct experiences with the formal and informal practices being taught during each class as well as their experiences from daily home practice (45 to 60 minutes). Each week’s practices build upon each of the previous weeks’ lessons.

This course will be taught by trained and certified MBSR teacher, Kim Dastrup. She received her training through the Mindfulness Center at Brown University. Additionally, Kim is a yoga instructor at Mosaic Yoga and teaches Yoga for Wellness and Mindfulness courses at Westminster College.
